Equipment
I’m using a Canon 400d which is a great camera for the price. On it’s own it’s a little small for my hand but the addition of the BG-E3 battery grip brings it up to size and gives me room for my last two fingers.

- 10.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor
- EOS Integrated Cleaning System
- 2.5″ LCD
- iso 100-1600
- 9-point wide-area AF
- DIGIC II
- 3fps with up to 27 frame burst
I didn’t use the 18-55 kit lens that came with it, I fitted a Canon EF 28-90mm 1:4-5.6 USM instead. The fast USM focus was great and it was my main lens until an aperture blade started getting stuck.
Rather than get it fixed, I decided to replace it with the Canon EF-S 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 IS, Canon’s current kit lens for the 450d. I think losing the USM on the 28-90 was worth it for the Image Stabilization I’ve gained on the 18-55, and although I’ve lost quite a bit of zoom, the extra wide angle at the 18mm end is fantastic for the street.

- Maximum aperture F3.5-5.6
- Minimum aperture F22-38
- Lens Construction
- 11 elements in 9 groups
- 1 Aspherical element
- Image stabilisation
- 4 stops
- Single mode (no panning)
- 6 diaphragm blades
I also have a Tamron AF70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di LD Macro which is a nice sharp lens with a good build quality. As I don’t take sniper shots I hardly ever use it, but it’s nice to know it’s with me if I ever need it.

- Lens Construction – 13 Elements in 9 groups
- Rotating Zoom
- 9 Diaphragm blades
- Minimum Aperture – F/32
- Macro Magnification Ratio 1:2 (at f=300mm MFD 0.95m)
- Minimum Focus Distance – 59in.(1.5m) in normal setting/ 37.4″ (0.95m) in macro mode (f=180mm-300mm range)
